Coulter Parkette on Green Street in Port Elgin is beginning to take shape with the pavilion now completed.

“Our students did a great job,” says teacher Bud Halpin.  “Heading to the end of the school year, they were under a real deadline and they met it.  Every inch of the pavilion has been hand-crafted and the students are proud of the work they’ve done.”

The students were the first to enjoy their newly completed pavilion when they were treated to a BBQ lunch on Thursday (June 21) provided by the Wismer House.

The students of Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) trades program have been invaluable to the Town of Saugeen Shores as they have completed many projects throughout the community.  The community has not only benefitted from the trades program but the students have also had the opportunity to learn through hands-on skills training.

The project began May 2nd when the timbers arrived at the SDSS shop and students began to sand every timber and board and stain each piece twice.  The students also completed extensive scaffold and general construction safety training in preparation for the build.  Three classes of 15 to 20 students worked ont he project for seven days, completing it on June 12th.

The Town and SDSS partnered on the project and two local contactors made a significant contribution in working with the students.

“We have to thank our two contractors who stepped in to help the students,” said Bud Halpin.  “Patrick Thompson Construction (PTC) installed the low slope roof membrane with the help of students and this is the 4th roof that they have helped our students on. PTC takes the time to explain the materials to the students and teaches them how to install to industry standards.  “It’s this kind of support that lets SDSS students keep up to today’s best practices.”

George’s Carpentry also helped the students install the pine ceiling.  “This is the second time that George Betts has donated his and his employees’ time to help the students,” says Halpin.  “He has also supported SDSS Construction for many years by taking on co-op students.  It’s the support of contractors like this that has had a positive effect on our students by exposing them to different trades, skill sets and opportunities that are in the construction industry.”

The parkette has become a central hub for a variety of activities in downtown Port Elgin, ranging from the Wednesday summer farmers’ market to concerts and theFarm to Table fall harvest event.
